What do the colder months mean for you and your skin?
Autumn and winter can make it harder for you to take care of your skin during the colder months and my winter skincare tips can help guide and protect you. There are many elements that can damage your skin, but fear not, you can have wonderful healthy skin all year round and I’m going to tell you how. 😁
Most of us will eventually cave in at some point when it gets too cold and switch the heating on. You know, when it gets to the point where the dog’s teeth are chattering, that’s when we think it’s time for our central heating to go on, or we even light a lovely warm fire.🔥
What often accompanies the colder weather, are strong winds, an increased use of indoor central heating, a change in humidity and of course, lots of rain! None of these are dreadful; however, they can all have a negative effect on your skin if you don’t take care of it and protect it correctly.
How you choose to protect your skin during Autumn and Winter is so important, and you may find your normal spring/summer products will not do the job as well during the colder months. Ultimately, what it comes down to is that most of us will need extra hydration in our skin.
“I am very interested in your winter skincare tips, what are my options, Bev?” I hear you say….
There are many ways you can improve your skincare regime during autumn and winter, and here are just a few of my winter skincare tips and suggestions;
- Regularly use hydrating face masque treatments, which you can perform at home. I have lots of suitable professional hydrating face masques to choose from.
- Switch to a serum or moisturiser specifically targeted for increasing hydration levels. You can incorporate these into your existing skincare routine.
- Take internal supplements which increase your fatty acids, such as Moisture IQ or Skin Omegas.
- Continue to use your SPF daily as it protects your skin from UVA and windburn.
- Ensure you have regular facials; these will enhance the levels of hydration in your skin.
- Drink lots of water.
- Get a good night’s sleep.
Some of these may seem obvious, but many people do stop using their SPF in winter because we don’t see the sun as much or feel its warmth, but it’s super important to use it all year round as it absolutely can still cause UVA damage to your skin.
There are many common skin problems that are exasperated during the colder months, such as dry skin, irritation and inflammation, eczema, rosacea flares, and dandruff – to name but a few. Of course, your skin is going to be different from mine, and therefore, your needs will be different, and that goes for everyone, but once I help you understand your skin, you will have the knowledge to know what it requires and the power to take care of it and have fabulous looking skin all year round. 😁
Did you know – that cleansers are essential to remove makeup and to keep the skin free from pollution, bacteria, dirt, and excess oils, using the incorrect cleanser for your skin can be detrimental (which I know seems peculiar considering the amount of time a cleanser is on the skin, which isn’t long at all!) but some cleansers can be extremely stripping to the skin. More often than not, a change of cleanser to a pH-balanced hydrating cleanser will, in itself, have a positive impact on the skin through the colder seasons.
Let’s have a chat about hydrating acids and how they work with your skin….
One of the most widely used hydrating acids that is great for your skin is hyaluronic acid, and the chances are you may have heard of it as it’s been a buzzword in the skincare world for a long time now. However, you may not understand what it is or even what it does.
Essentially, and in easy-to-understand terms, hyaluronic acid moisturises the outer layers of your skin by binding water molecules together. Hyaluronic acid can hold its weight 1000x times in water, which in turn increases the water content of your skin and can help to improve its appearance. It helps the skin flex and stretch and reduces some of those fine lines and wrinkles. Now, doesn’t that sound fabulous? You will often find it as an active ingredient in many of your skincare products, from serums to moisturisers and even face masques.
Did you know? – When using a pure hyaluronic acid serum or the like, it should always be applied to damp/wet skin as hyaluronic acid draws water from the skin, locking in moisture. Applied to dry skin, it can actually increase the skin’s dryness, which no one really wants!
As we get older, our natural levels of hyaluronic acid decline, partly due to age and hormone changes, but also external factors such as air pollution, UV radiation and smoking, which, of course, isn’t great,, but fear not, you can increase your levels of hyaluronic acid with your professional skincare products.
Why is it important to have moisture in your skin?
Of course, aesthetically, your skin appears to be in better condition and looks nicer when it is hydrated. However, it’s not just about the aesthetics; dry/dehydrated skin has its own concerns. When your skin isn’t well hydrated, the effectiveness of it acting as a barrier reduces and can quickly cause a barrier dysfunction. Your skin may become more vulnerable to external and environmental damage, which can lead to infections and all sorts of unpleasant skin conditions. Now, let’s face it: none of us want that! Therefore, the moral of the story? Keep your skin hydrated.
You see, it’s all about understanding your skin and tailoring your skin regime and products to suit your skin conditions.
