Not All LED Face Masks Are Created Equal – Why Dermalux Is Different

LED face masks have become incredibly popular, with prices ranging from relatively inexpensive beauty gadgets to sophisticated light therapy devices. From the outside, many appear to offer the same thing: red and near-infrared light delivered through a mask.

But having the correct wavelength is only part of the equation.

For LED phototherapy to be effective, wavelength, light intensity, treatment dose, treatment time, LED positioning and the way that light is distributed across the skin all matter.

What Is LED Phototherapy?

LED phototherapy uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate biological processes within the skin, a process known as photobiomodulation.

Unlike UV light, the wavelengths used within LED phototherapy do not work by damaging the skin. Instead, light energy is absorbed by cellular targets, triggering biological responses that can support skin repair, renewal and overall skin function.

Different wavelengths penetrate the skin to different depths and produce different biological effects, which is why simply having LEDs inside a face mask doesn’t necessarily make it an effective phototherapy device.

The wavelength needs to be appropriate, but the skin also needs to receive the right amount of light.

Why Not All LED Face Masks Are the Same

When comparing LED face masks, it is very easy to focus on how many LEDs a mask contains or how powerful the manufacturer says it is.

Neither tells you the whole story.

For photobiomodulation, the dose of light actually delivered to the skin is important. This is influenced by several factors, including the wavelength, irradiance, treatment time, distance between the LEDs and the skin, and how evenly the light is distributed.

Two masks can therefore use apparently similar wavelengths yet deliver very different treatments.

This is one of the reasons I think it is important to look beyond specifications such as LED numbers when choosing a home LED device.

Why the Distance Between the LEDs and Your Skin Matters

One of the most interesting features of the Dermalux LED Face Mask is something you may not immediately notice when looking at it.

Unlike many flexible LED masks that sit directly against the face, Dermalux uses patent-pending Off-the-Skin Technology™.

Why does that matter?

Imagine shining a torch directly against a wall compared with moving it slightly away. As the light moves away from the surface, it spreads across a wider area.

The principle is useful when thinking about LED masks. Positioning LEDs extremely close to the skin can create areas receiving concentrated light while other areas receive less.

Red light at 633nm supports skin rejuvenation.
