Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides stimulate the fibroblast cells that naturally decrease as we age. Fibroblasts are the cells that secrete collagen proteins and are responsible for the scaffolding to keep our skin firm. Polynucleotides also repair damaged skin, increase elastin production and provide added hydration to the skin. To keep it simple, this is the most basic of explanations.
Polynucleotides are injectable treatments that can be performed pretty much everywhere where there is a need for repairing, hydrating, or rejuvenating the skin. They are safer than the alternative ‘traditional’ dermal fillers as they are very superficially injected, unlike dermal fillers. Polynucleotides are not cross-linked, so they cannot add volume to areas like a filler can, although they are a great way to rejuvenate your skin, whether that’s face or body, as results are long-lasting and provide noticeable results. Polynucleotides are a more natural way of rejuvenating your skin on a cellular level. They increase fibroblast activity, which improves tissue regeneration and restores the appearance of your skin. They also have an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and hydrating effect, which results in skin that looks and feels healthier, radiant and rejuvenated.
We can all appreciate that ageing is an absolute privilege, however, that doesn’t mean we can’t take care of our skin and improve its appearance and this treatment is a fantastic way to do that.
There are different forms and qualities of polynucleotides. I use two types in my treatments, which are;
- Vitaran
The first-ever 100% quality-controlled polynucleotide. It is produced from 100% purified, filtered and sterilised salmon DNA. It has great anti-inflammatory benefits, as well as stimulating the production of elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid. This will rejuvenate your skin and repair it at the same time. Vitaran can be used all over the face and body and under the eyes with outstanding results.
- Illuma Luna
This polynucleotide and skin booster is solely used to treat under and around your eyes. It contains hyaluronic acid and increases cell permeability. What does that mean? It means it has a double-boosting effect of regeneration. It is also safer to use around sensitive skin, such as around the eyes. It helps to lighten dark areas and assists in reducing bags under the eyes whilst providing hydration and rejuvenation to the eye area.

What are the risks?
The risks are low as the injections are very superficial, but as with any injectable skin treatment, there is a small risk of bruising and swelling immediately after the treatment. You will see small ‘blebs’ under the skin where I have injected; however, these should only last around 24- 48 hours as they start to dissolve fully.
Why are polynucleotide treatments becoming the ‘go to’ choice now rather than traditional fillers?

How many treatments will I need?
When receiving treatment of polynucleotides, you would initially need 3 to 4 treatments which are spaced 4 weeks apart. It depends on what we start with and the quality of your skin at the beginning.
Who is it suitable for?
I am a fan of Polynucleotides, they are a great low-risk way to treat your skin, however, it is important to note that it comes from Salmon DNA, so it is an animal product (no Salmon are harmed), however, if you are a vegetarian or vegan, this may not be the treatment for you. (I have plenty of other Vegan treatments). If you have an allergy to fish, then this is also something for you to avoid. Other than these, polynucleotide treatments are suitable for most people looking to rejuvenate their skin.
How quickly will I see results?
You will need a few treatments to get the full effects, however, you should start seeing results a few weeks after your first session. Of course, when you have had your second and third sessions, you will start to see the improvements. Once you have completed a course of 3 or 4 treatments, the results typically last for around six to nine months.
Combining Treatments
One of the best things about polynucleotides is that they can be combined with other treatments to get you the very best results possible.
As an example, you could have a polynucleotide treatment alongside a skin booster such as Seventy Hyal 2000 or Profhilo and gain the benefits of both treatments. You would get added hydration, plumping and firming from the skin booster, while also getting the rejuvenation and further increase in collagen and elastin from the polynucleotide.
