Collagen

What are the benefits of collagen, why do we need it, and how do we get it?

Collagen is a type of protein that is an essential component of many tissues in the body, including skin, bones and tendons and is the most abundant protein in mammals making up one-third of the body’s protein content.

Collagen provides structural support and elasticity to tissues helping them maintain their shape and function. Collagen is composed of long chains of amino acids that are tightly packed together to form a triple helix structure which is paramount for skin, hair and nail health. As we age, our body’s ability to produce collagen decreases, leading to sagging skin, wrinkles and other signs of ageing. (Think of it like scaffold poles holding our skin up, as you take the scaffold poles away, the skin falls and sags). From the age of 25, research shows that our levels deplete by 1% per year.

Collagen is produced by specialist cells called fibroblasts, which are found in the dermis. There are several types of collagen in the skin, but type 1 collagen is the most prevalent.

The key reasons and the benefits of collagen:

  • Structural support: collagen is the main structural protein in our skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage providing strength, elasticity and support.
  • Skin health: Helping to maintain elasticity, strength and support. Improves hydration firmness and elasticity.
  • Joint health: Providing the tissue that cushions our joints and allows us to move without pain.
  • Gut health: Helps maintain the health of our gut lining, strengthening and repairing the intestinal wall, which may help in digestive issues such as leaky gut syndrome.

How do we get collagen?

Collagen is only produced by the body and involves several complex steps. The body synthesises amino acids and assembles them into long chains, forming a pro-collagen molecule. Enzymes modify the pro-collagen and create collagen molecules, which are assembled into fibrils that form collagen fibres.

Will taking collagen supplements or drinks give me collagen?

No, the only way we can get collagen is for the body to produce it. Taking collagen supplements or drinking collagen drinks will not give our body or skin collagen, the best we can do is internally support the body’s production of collagen by oral supplementation and a varied healthy diet. There are several nutrients that are required to support the body in the production of collagen. The two most recognised are:

  • Vitamin C – a crucial nutrient for the synthesis of pro-collagen and protects fibres from damage with its potent antioxidant capabilities.
  • Zinc – a mineral that is involved in collagen synthesis and stability.

What supplements do I recommend for collagen support?

To support the body in collagen production, a combination of nutrients such as vitamin C, zinc and phytonutrients should be prioritised, all found in The Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Collagen Synergy. Developed to help with youth-preserving and to create firmer and fuller skin.

What are the three best skincare ingredients to support collagen production?

I will always recommend retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A that have been shown to stimulate collagen production by increasing cell turnover and promoting the growth of new collagen fibres. Vitamin C protects the skin from free radical damage which can contribute to collagen breakdown. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. Peptides, these are short chains of amino acids that help to stimulate collagen production by signalling to the the skin cells to produce more collagen and elastin…..and don’t forget your SPF!
